Cloud Bill: 5 Hidden Costs Weighing on Your IT Budget

4 min read

Is your cloud bill rising while your usage seems stable? You are not alone. Part of your cloud spending is not visible at first glance: it hides in forgotten resources, misunderstood pricing or usage that changes faster than budgets.

Why do cloud bills drift without anyone noticing?

Cloud is paid for by usage. That is its strength: you get started quickly, without investing in hardware. It is also its weakness: every team can create resources in a few clicks and the bill follows.

According to the Flexera 2026 State of the Cloud Report, surveyed organisations estimate that 29% of their cloud spend is wasted. The figure is rising for the first time in 5 years, partly because of AI workloads. The same study shows that 85% of organisations cite managing cloud spend as their top challenge.

A hidden cloud cost is not wasteful by nature: it is a cost that nobody is managing.

Where do hidden costs lie?

1. Forgotten resources

A test machine still running, a disk detached from a deleted server, a backup kept with no end date… Taken one by one, they cost little. Added up over months, they weigh heavily. They often come from a finished project whose environment nobody thought to shut down.

2. Oversizing

To be safe, teams often choose machines that are more powerful than needed. Without tracking actual usage, this oversizing stays in place and is paid for every month. A server running at 15% of its capacity can often move to a smaller size without users noticing any difference.

3. Outbound data transfers

Moving data into the cloud is often free. Moving it out, to another cloud or to your users, is charged. These egress fees are rarely anticipated when an architecture is designed. They grow with the exchanges between applications hosted by different providers.

4. Licences and add-on services

Software licences, support, monitoring or security tools added project after project: these lines pile up without always being linked to a specific use. Some licences stay active for employees who have left or for tools that have been replaced.

5. New AI usage

Generative AI services are often billed by consumption. Usage that grows without governance can make one line of the bill jump within weeks. The most powerful models are not always needed: choosing the right model for each use case is part of keeping costs under control. Our article on industrialising enterprise AI looks at this shift from testing to everyday use.

How can you take back control of your cloud bill?

The answer has a name: FinOps, short for “finance” and “operations”. It is an approach that brings technical, finance and business teams together to manage the value of cloud spending jointly. The FinOps Foundation has formalised its principles.

FinOps is not about cutting budgets but about making every cost visible and assigned to a use. In practice, this means systematic tagging of resources and shared dashboards. It also takes simple rules: test environments shut down automatically at night, regular reviews of reservations, alerts when spending drifts.

Commitment-based discounts offered by providers (reservations or savings plans) are another lever. They lower the unit price in exchange for a one- or three-year commitment: you still need to know your needs precisely so you do not pay for unused capacity.

According to Flexera, 63% of organisations already have a FinOps team. Visibility is not enough: it is regular, shared action that brings the bill down.

Who should manage this spending?

Management cannot rest on IT alone. The teams that create resources need to see what they cost. Finance needs to understand what makes the bill vary.

A monthly meeting between these stakeholders, based on shared indicators, often makes all the difference. It lets everyone decide together: keep, reduce or stop.

The first results often come quickly. Removing orphaned resources and resizing machines are simple actions that need no redesign. Deeper savings come next, when you review the architecture itself: choice of services, distribution of workloads, data storage based on how often it is used.

The goal is not to spend as little as possible but to know what each euro spent brings to the business.

This ties in with a broader question we explored in our article “Why Is Digital Getting Heavier and Heavier?”: an unused resource costs money but also energy.
